Recipe: Homemade Natural Wound-Cleaning Solution

Earlier this week, we discussed the importance of healthy bacteria for tissue healing and recovery after a scratch, cut, or similar small wound. We also discussed how relying too much on a disinfecting wound-cleaning solution can harm these healthy bacteria and actually negatively impact your body’s natural ability to heal. The next time you’re stocking up on your first aid kit, talk to your doctor about whether a homemade natural wound-cleaning solution is a better choice for you and your lifestyle.

The recipe below for a natural wound-cleaning solution is made with a few readily available ingredients. Saline solution, which is a sterile liquid with a 0.9% salt concentration, helps flush out dirt and harmful bacteria from your cut. Baking soda, which is technically known as sodium bicarbonate, has natural antiseptic properties, reduces your risks of getting an infection, and may help to gently soften scabs and prevent scars from forming.

Combined, these ingredients in this homemade natural wound-cleaning solution doesn’t disrupt your body’s natural bacterial levels while also helping your cut or wound to heal faster.

Ingredients

1 cup of sterile water (boiled and cooled)
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Instructions:

Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and warm water. Make sure your hands are clean before preparing the solution.

Boil a cup of water to sterilize it. Allow it to cool to room temperature before using it in the solution.

In a clean container, pour the sterile water.

Add the salt and baking soda to the water.

Stir the mixture until the salt and baking soda have completely dissolved.

Your homemade wound cleaning solution is ready to use.

How to Use Your Natural Wound-Cleaning Solution

Gently clean the area around the wound with mild soap and water.

Once the area is clean, pour a small amount of the homemade wound-cleaning solution onto a sterile cotton pad or a piece of gauze.

Gently dab the wound with the solution-soaked cotton pad or gauze. Avoid rubbing or applying excessive pressure.

If the wound is deep or requires additional cleaning, you may use a syringe (without the needle) to gently flush the wound with the solution.

After cleaning, pat the wound dry with a clean, sterile cloth or allow it to air dry.

Apply an appropriate wound dressing or bandage as needed.

Remember, while homemade wound cleaning solutions can be helpful for minor wounds, it’s always advisable to consult a healthcare professional for more serious or infected wounds to ensure proper treatment.
